EX-COLLEGIATE CHURCH OF ALCAÑIZ
Situated in the Plaza de España, the
Ex-Collegiate Church of Santa María la
Mayor rises on a small hill near to the
market and the Town Hall, the most re-
presentative buildings. This is a Baroque
construction built on the foundations
of a previous building of the XIII and
XIV centuries. Only the tower adjoined
TOWN HALL OF ALCAÑIZ to the west side of the primitive Gothic
Pza. España, 1 Church is conserved. The new church
44600 Alcañiz was designed by Domingo de Yarza,
Tel.: 978 87 05 65 who worked on the Basilica of the Pilar
www.alcaniz.es in Zaragoza, and its construction fina-
lised in 1757.
A medieval construction with an outs-
tanding Gothic style tower, the Church
of Santa María la Mayor stands besi-
de the Plaza de España, rising abo-
ve the Lonja and the Town Hall, two
buildings of similar beauty which make
this square one of the most charming in
the province. The altitude and majesty
of the Tower are associated with the
wish to create an imperial town, which
would be perfectly complemented by
the Calatravo Castle which presides
the town of Alcañiz from on high. Inside
several pictorial treasures are con-
served. Outstanding among which is
one made by Domingo Ram, who in his
epoch was one of the most important DISCOVER TERUEL
painters in Aragón.
